The key design principle is to create an addition that works cohesively with the features of the existing dwelling, and to minimise the extension of the building footprint. The current building form is divided into distinctive blocks, all connected by the entrance/ gallery space. The new addition assimilates this composition, creating a roof line that varies in height and proportion. Deep roof overhangs and fascias are introduced to create an intricate exterior style circumvent a monolithic appearance. These fine lines are returned vertically to the ground to anchor the addition and to merge seamlessly to the existing angled bay windows and fin walls features.

Window openings on the upper level have been framed with deep angled recesses that serve 2 purposes, firstly to enhance cohesion with the existing features, secondly to break up the overall bulk of the addition.

Fine line screens function as privacy screens and to add another layer of finesse to the exterior. Material selection is confined to a natural and textural palette that blends with its landscaped context. Matching vertical shiplap cladding continues up the vertical elements and to the soffit to further enhance the connection with the existing house. Vertical patina copper clads the recessive planes of the addition, giving a dark tone to the exterior that is rich in texture.
