Sited on a hillcrest of Kohimarama, our client wanted to build their ultimate home that captures the expansive sea view towards Rangitoto Island. Constrained by the compact site, sloping topography and neighbouring houses, our architectural solution is a three-storeys dwelling that amalgamate with the sloping ground and at the same time, elevating the top level sufficiently to realize an unobstructed viewing platform. The gentle slope is incised by a landscaped plinth from which the house is to be anchored. This sculpted topography becomes a new dynamic entity that demarcates and connects to the programmatic requirements above. A hovering mass sits above this plinth, defining a void that contains the main entertainment spaces. The floating volume stretches end to end to capture the panorama, and its outline shifts instinctively to direct the occupants towards the distant views.
