Located within a gated community in Okura Bush, our client wanted a family home that captures the panoramic view towards the Karepiro Bay. Our architectural solution is an elongated form that runs in parallel with the panorama, activating the site as a mechanism for viewing. This rectangular form anchored into the landscape, stretching end to end to provide continuous protection from the prevailing north east wind. Living and sleeping spaces occupy the northern aspect, favouring the abundant sunlight and coastal view, while niches, overhangs and covered courtyard protect the occupants from the high summer sun and harsh winter elements. The guest annex bunkered into the southern slope, pivoting off the main house at the entry. This V-shaped arrangement creates a protected private courtyard that widens towards the western aspect, directing the occupant’s vista into a densely populated native landscape.
