Located in a tree-lined avenue in Epsom, our client wanted an annex addition and a considered outdoor entertainment to replace the rather neglected and unused backyard. Given the newly built high-density development to the property’s southern end, the architectural solution is to utilise the two-storey annex as a privacy screen that span across the southern boundary. This disposition of massing formed an elongated, sheltered courtyard that maximises the northwestern aspect and the connection with the outdoor. This newly formed courtyard comprised a swimming pool, luscious landscaping and a series of patios that responded to the dynamics of the internal spaces.

The roof skirt detail featured in the existing dwelling has been reconceptualised in a sleek, hard-edged version. This aesthetics became the formative principle throughout the design, creating a seamless interface between the old and the new.
